I've been editing a lot of Sony HDV stuff lately (1080i, 30fps) and
have just tried exporting an HDV sequence from Premiere Pro CS3 to
Encore CS3 so I can burn a standard DV version of the videos on a
standard DVD. I've been getting really lousy results from Premiere
when it down-converts HDV into a DV AVI file for import into Encore:
everything looks soft and out of focus.

Just for comparison, I tried recording the HDV production from
Premiere to my original camcorder, a Sony HVR-A1U, and then
re-captured the footage in Premiere while the A1U played back and
down-converted in camera to DV. The results were spectacularly
better! You can take a look at comparison frame grabs here:

It turns out that a Sony HDV camcorder, down-converting from HDV to
DV on the fly, does a far superior job to Premiere, which has all the
time in the world to down-convert from HDV to DV into an AVI file.
I've tried every different export setting in Premiere that I can
think of: MS AVI, MS DV AVI, MS uncompressed AVI, recompression on,
recompression off, and much more but it all ends up looking like
out-of-focus garbage. The same is true if I let Premiere do
compression into standard-def mpeg2 files.

Has anyone on the list figured out a way to whip Premiere into shape
when exporting HDV to DV AVI? Right now it's unusable. I don't want
to have to export to tape, then recapture and export to AVI to burn a
decent DVD. Premiere should be able to export straight to usable DV
AVI for import into Encore.

Thanks for any pointers or ideas,

Mike Boom
