This has been a really interesting topic, and I've now conducted my
own tests I thought you might be interested in what I've found.

I have a Matrox RTX2 system with Premiere CS3 & edit 1080i 25fps pal
using the Matrox HDV codec.

I made a ten minute edit & exported it 3 times using:
1. the Matrox HD 1080i Export Movie settings interlaced
2. the Matrox HD 1080i Export Movie settings de-interlaced
3. Adobe Media Encoder to Blu-Ray template, customized to min 20, av
25, max 30, 2 pass

I then imported into Encore CS3 & created a HD & SD disc from the 3
exports, setting Encore transcode to automatic (where required). The
results:

Blu-Ray Disc:
1. Horrible wavy lines on movement
2. Very nice with a little artifacting, almost as original
3. Really nice, very smooth & seemingly as the original

However, on burning the SD DVD, the results were:
1. Horrible wavy lines on movement
2. Acceptable, but a slightly softer de-interlaced look and every now
and again the speed on pans looked unnatural
3. Horrible & jerky

So the result is: What is good for HD is not good for SD & vice-versa!

The best solution I have found is to make two separate master edits
from the master timeline, using the Adobe Media Encoder to create Blu-
Ray material, and for SD the Export Movie Matrox DVCam widescreen
template, which makes the best proper interlaced SD version from HD
material.

It is a bit of a hassle, but it is the best way I have found. The
Matrox SD encoder is super-quick, but the Adobe HD encoder is five
times longer than the Matrox HD encoder. Is it worth the extra time
for extra little bit of quality? I personally think so but probably
joe public wouldn't notice. But I would! lol. I ceate the menus in HD
& save them as 2 separate Encore projects, one HD & one SD. Encore
does a great job at shrinking the HD menus for the SD DVD.

Hope this helps
