The great challenge is how to get cultural institutions concerned with
anything other than their own growth and survival - and I don't know that
humanity has ever produced a solution for this other than to destroy them and
then start all over again.
There's really no comparison between the civic mindedness -- and aesthetic
mindedness -- of the art museums of 1900 and the art museums of today.
Meanwhile, the number of staff involved has increased exponentially.
The nice thing about the new wing at the A.I.C. is that it will be standing
long after our rather bizarre notions of "contemporary art" have passed. (and
it is a pleasant, handsome building, as opposed to the one recently built for
the Museum of Contemporary Art ("Fear No Art"), which resembles a police
station in the Third Reich)
