The word abstract was used to mean a quality before its use to mean art which was not representational. The quality of abstraction came before the art which is called abstract. I think this means the comment is not circular. "Verity comes first and produces conventions? First the verity of art as an abstraction and later the convention of abstract art?" Your comment " But since all art or all 'verity' is abstract, the comment is circular." would be a generalization. Kate Sullivan

The quality exists before the cateogry of art. The quality produces the verity and the category as a convention follows after. But since all art or all 'verity' is abstract, the comment is circular. Thus conventions produce verity. What produces the conventions?
