Seriously, I don't think I've ever been to any similar sized cities where I'd be less worried about walking at night... also, I'm guessing you could probably take the trax most of the way if you didn't feel like walking.

There is a section in downtown near the Gateway Mall that has several homeless shelters. Evil things happen there nightly. But chances are that if you don't talk to strangers on the street you should be okay.
