My wife is a Canadian citizen. At least for another year or two. So we've been through the whole move to the states thing on a visa.
I totally agree with you. It would be one thing to say "we're not going to issue any more visas to these countries". I might even be able to go along with denying entry to people holding a non-immigrant-path visa. But denying people who have been through the entire process of making the decision to move to the US, going through the entire vetting process, and so on is quite simply bullshit. Every one of the people who are on an immigrant path has been through FBI background checks, been fingerprinted, been through medical exams, had an in-person interview at a embassy. Not to mention thousands of dollars and enormous amounts of time. We have filled a good portion of a file box with immigration paperwork... And...like you mentioned, all of these people have given up a life elsewhere to move here only to be denied at the border. This just isn't right. The whole initial thing of not permitting green card holders back in the country is even smellier bullshit. Thankfully they've backed off on that. You would think someone who has an immigrant wife would be more understanding toward those people who give up their lives elsewhere to move here. I understand wanting to protect our country (we can discuss whether this actually would help or not), but this is just the wrong way to do this.
