They provide a uniform interface that allows to access high-level concepts through low-level standard input. They allow to perform supervised training without special 'label signals'. For action learning, word can be associated with a certain kind of actions, and then this word can be used to evoke this kind of action in novel situations, forcing this class of actions on those situations. Words are simple high-level handles that can be used to move around and direct complex processes associated with them.
