- I believe it's an EXCEL-import problem.
- All that's supposed to be there is a time, "10:40:01".
- I don't have EXCEL, but the person who originally typed it in only typed
"10:40"; I think I may have added the ':01' and then saved it again while trying
to figure out the problem.
- I've got no idea where the 1899 date comes from. This data is just a
first-year university biology course, recording some data from an experiment
every few minutes, and typed into Excel by students with not a lot of computer
interest or knowledge. They may (or may not) have been using Excel set to
Chinese.
- I'm surprised the hour/minute functions don't return the '10' and '40' values
even if the date is from 1899.
- When entering the formula using the formula wizard, the '10' and '40' show up
on the dialog box when entering hour(A2) or minute(A2), just not in the sheet.
- I'm also surprised that cutting and pasting to a new sheet fixed the problem;
shouldn't the (hidden) date be copied as well, regardless of how screwy it is?

This doesn't happen to be fixed in the latest version, is it?

Thanks for the quick turnaround time.
