(SNIP) > My question: is there a way to increase the default sound level? Interesting question. I have two linux boxen here, one running 8.0 (kernel-2.4.18-18.8.0) and the other running 7.3 (kernel-2.4.18-18.7.x). Each has an sblive. HOWEVER, the 8.0 box has (from alsamixer) chip TriTech TR28602 [Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)]while the 7.3 box has chip: SigmaTel STAC9708/11 [Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 08)]. FWIW, the 8.0 box, with the same speakers (swapped the cable) with the same volume setting on the speaker (unchanged) and identical volume settings from alsamixer, the 8.0 box is significantly softer than the 7.3 box. And the identical modules exist in /etc/modules.conf on both machines. I had previously swapped the cards to see if there was any difference which followed a card -- none was observed. Clearly something makes a difference, but changing the default sound level may not be the whole issue. Interesting, if not an answer. Good luck Bill Austin -- William W.
