Eric, Thank you very much for the explanation. Since I haven't participated in the ALTO discussion until recently, I am not aware that working group has already reached consensus on the document. Seeing the document is only at its Version 1, I thought the document is still at its early stage and open for input.
I will take you suggestion on trying to draw a "better picture" and submit to the working group for review. If no better picture can be agreed by the working group, I would like to take your offer on putting the following words into the document: Figure 1 is only representative of the situation and, in particular, does NOT enumerate any particular or favored implementation strategy Thanks, Linda Dunbar -----Original Message----- From: Eric Burger [mailto:ebur...@standardstrack.com] Sent: Tuesday, June 02, 2009 8:31 AM To: Linda Dunbar Cc: alto Subject: Re: Comments to "draft-ietf-alto-problem-statement-01" You are entirely correct that the goal of this document is to lay out the problem and not the solution. Moreover, it is unfortunate, yet true, that one may interpret any pictorial representation of an instantiation of ALTO services as a preferred method of deploying ALTO. I would offer that your assertion that there may be issues with cross- domain ALTO services is correct. I would also offer that these issues are both solvable and possibly out of scope for ALTO. However, we would offer that Figure 1 is only representative of the situation and, in particular, does NOT enumerate any particular or favored implementation strategy. Moreover, at a very high level, this figure embodies the general approach taken by the work group and what the IESG enumerated in our charter. At this point, our alternative is to remove the figure. However, we put the figure in because a number of people commented in prior drafts that we needed a figure. It is our opinion (as members of the work group) that this is the best we can do. If one has a better figure, please submit it. Otherwise, I believe we have work group consensus to go forward with the document as is.
