Personally I use a VX-8GR but that's because I bought it for the APRS TNC and now I have it. I think you're on the right track with Yaesu, basically any unit with a signal meter would do. I've always been impressed with their quality and capabilities. The FT-4XR does look nice, especially for the price.
And yes, my garbage Baofeng is as useless as yours in this use case!
