That's certainly not normal, but you'd have to give us a few more details
to figure it out.  Please post the whole session, including something
showing the files that amrecover sees and the "ls" of the directory
after the restore showing the files did not come back.

You might also do a "list" command after adding everything you want.
That will show what tapes will be needed.

Note that this doesn't mean we don't believe you :-).  It's just hard
with the information so far to guess where the problem is.

Are you using dump or GNU tar?  What version of GNU tar (gtar --version)?

Amrecover should have prompted you through the whole sequence needed
to recover the files.  If it needed more than one tape (or files from
images in the holding disk), it would have told you that.
