I don't see that as being a mistake.
There are a lot of arseholes on IRC.
I certainly wouldn't ever accept an .EXE or a .DOC file from anyone on IRC.
Even if the person sending the .DOC file doesn't know it, there's a high probability 
of the file containing a virus. (Yes, I know this isn't going to be an issue when 
you're using AmIRC, but until I get my PPC board back....) A lot of people on IRC 
aren't going to be running Antivirus software, and there are PC viruses that replicate 
by sending themselves by IRC.
