Android runs in a compatibility mode with each new release to ensure apps
that target earlier platforms don't break. You should not be required to
recompile your app for the newest version, though it's certainly
recommended.

Without more information - probably a bug in your app. And the one's you
observed as well. My app has widgets and does not yet target 6.0 and it
works fine on my Nexus 5 with Marshmallow. So do all the other widgets I'm
currently using.

Have you tried debugging your app ... ?
