Okay I know I have been pretty long-winded so far but I have just a
couple more points to add! I swear! :-)

First, is it just me or do the Android Engineers from Google seem a
tad bit grumpy on these discussions when criticism is aimed at
Android?? I can understand frustration when a discussion is posted in
the wrong group, but no one ever seems to welcome the criticism.
Ideally, the critique or complaint would be framed by the poster in a
constructive way... but even if it isn't, is it so much to ask for a
little humility, and for Android's developers to accept that not every
single user is going to be 100% delighted with Android? And that
constructive criticism and feedback is an absolute necessity to
achieve continuous progress, improvements and innovations?

Second, I have to say that I disagree that Android isn't "on par" with
the iPhone. This is obviously just a subjective opinion that varies by
user, and I'm not saying that anyone is "wrong" when they favor the
iPhone over the G1 (the only device on the market running Android
natively at the time of this posting -- that I know of -- please
correct me if I am mistaken). I'm not going to get into the minor pros
and cons of iPhone vs. G1, but I have used both and have found the G1
experience to be significantly more pleasing, intuitive and
productive. There are also several features that the G1 offers that
the iPhone does not, and I am aware of very few features the iPhone
has that the G1 does not.

Also, check out the "cupcake" development branch:
http://source.android.com/roadmap/cupcake
(specifically, read all the features at the bottom that it includes)

As far as I know, this is scheduled for full release to the public in
April 2009 (though I'm not sure how accurate that date is -- it's
probably scheduled for release on the standard open-source date: "when
it is ready" -- which is the best possible date for it to be
released!). But that gives you an idea of some of the upcoming
features. And Android is only going to get better from there. It's
definitely not a stagnant project. And just like a good wine, an open
source project with widespread developer support only gets better with
time... until it reaches a certain age, at which point it becomes
bitter, and all the bits of grape dust settle to the bottom and yield
a disgusting glass of wine....... not that I'd really know, as I'm not
a fan of wine......... and this metaphor lost its connection with open
source projects when I started going on about "grape dust" anyway. But
you get the point! Patience! Android isn't nearly "complete!" :-) ---
(which is really a misnomer because it will probably never be
"complete" -- it will only die out, be replaced, be renamed, or
continue to be a better and better operating system for the rest of
eternity).
