You could package each piece of paid content as a separate app and put them on the Market. Some people have complained about how many "content" apps there are already, which is reasonable enough. Perhaps the problem could be solved by having a special "Unbrowsable" Market category for items which shouldn't appear in normal Market browsing or searching, but can only be found by doing a pname: search for the package name. That way apps could have their own in-app store and send the user back to the Market to do the actual purchase.
