You disagree with a common user in each of us? But that's
senseless! People don't do "measurement" in real life. People listen
to tunes over ipods. Presenting them with overcomplex machinery
designed to draw circles may recall bad memories of geometry lessons
and failing to understand why, if circle's formula is "pi-R-square",
it is still round.

So, just decide, if Angstrom is just for geeks like you and
me, or your grandma and girlfriend are also welcome.

Opinions, opinions. It doesn't matter, if it takes resources
or no, how much, and if specific person likes it or not. It's just a
distro must provide and reinforce its visual presentation, and good
place to do that is at "peak hours" like boot time, which otherwise
also full of other visual effects unliked by common user. So logo
display serves 2 purposes here, one already aimed at common user's
satisfaction, so it's quite natural to think how to squeeze few more
wows/gee-whizes out of it.
