AFAIK, Opie uses it's own terminal/X11-ish screen, so normal X11 applications (including Gnome/GTK/etc applications) can't find the display, and think they are in a terminal mode. Unfortunately, Opie (in it's current release at least) won't be able to handle non-Opie applications, and minimo and links-x11 aren't native Opie apps. This was discussed a while ago; someone suggested Opera, but believed that it was closed-source. Opie used to have an embedded-konqueror, but I haven't been able to find a package, and I haven't been able to build it from the OE sources. A good browser is the only thing that I miss in the Opie distribution :)
