Hmm, I notice an xqt and xqt2 in the OE dev tree. How hard would it be
to have Opie using that? Is it just a matter of on-device configuration,
or would it tend to break Opie?

It should not be hard. I am currently working on it and was able to start the Xqt server (see angstrom-devel list for it) . It was used on pdaXrom and openzaurus before. I agree with Lorn Potter that Opie should keep using the framebuffer. Xqt is a great solution for using some applications which are only available for X11. So you get the best thing out of both worlds. For your question about which version to use I am using xqt2 now. But xqt should also work. For xqt2 you need to change the mirror in the .bb file (e.g. ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.3.0/source ). A patch for that is available on the devel list.

PS: Paul is working on OE support for konqueror-embedded :) here is the current status page http://opie.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/KonquerorEmbedded2007
