The IIGS is definitely the "Top Dog". Actually, to some Apple II purists,
it's not an Apple II at all, it's a different computer with hardware Apple
II emulation. YMMV.

Your questions are very open-ended, is there something in particular you
want to do with a II?

The III gets some honors as a business-class (text-mode) workhorse. I owned
a III and a ///+ at one time, and while I can say that the version of
"Classic AppleWorks" for the III was a great thing for it's day, it doesn't
even come close to what is possible from a IIGS. Think of the II line as a
road, with the III family forking left into all-business use, the //e and
//c straight ahead with general usability, and the IIGS forking right into
contemporary GUI-driven use.

Even if all you want to do is use 8-bit software, getting a stock IIGS
(because of its better color management, built-in accelleration, etc) is
better than a souped-up //e or //c. IIGS units are going on eBay for the
same price as //e's.

my question involves the Apple II Family. Is the Apple IIGS the "Top Dog"

work horse of the group, or is the Apple III deserving of high honors??? Or
is one of the earlier models able to do more with available software ie
utilities, education, and entertainment. Last but not least are there any
online or mail order sources for hardware, software, and accessories???
Thanks Doug
