Given the huge interest the group has in music, I thought this would be
a good forum to get some feedback on this. I was wondering if there were
any hard-core 'audiophiles' on the group? I'm not one ... yet.

So, my curiosity stems from my recent researching-spree of some
audiophile-grade equipment -- brands that you usually don't hear about
(try PSB, BIC, Totem, Rotel, Arcam for instance). To be honest,
researching this can be an overwhelming experience for a someone who is
not 'into' the new or classic/vintage audio equipment.

Are you the kind that listens to your music on audiophile-grade
equipment. What's your configuration (receivers, speakers, etc)?

One of the first myths that was busted early on by one of my friends was
that Bose makes crappy systems!!! (What??? you may ask). They have great
marketing, but unfortunately

For the uninitiated, Wikipedia to the rescue:

"An audiophile, from Latin <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin>

and Greek philos[2]
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audiophile#cite_note-1> "loving," is a
hobbyist who seeks high-quality audio reproduction via the use of
non-mass-produced high-end audio

Some audiophiles try to listen to music at a quality level that is as
close to the original performance as possible using high-fidelity
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_fidelity> components. Others try to
recreate a particular sound belonging to a piece of equipment that is
old or no longer current, such as the sound created by tube amplifiers

Audiophile values may be applied at all stages of music reproduction:
the initial audio recording
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_recording> , the production process,
and the playback, which is usually in a home setting. High-end audio
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-end_audio> refers to expensive,
high-quality, or esoteric products and practices used in the
reproduction of music. Electronic gear used by audiophiles can be bought
at specialist shops and websites.[4]
