I think you have a great idea Lisa.  Simple yet effective.  I will vote for
it.

@Karthik I see value in being able to specify an error that is takes into
account the context of the action.  Yes the error could be made more
friendly on a global scale using the message catalog however it would be
even better to say "no matching profiles were found", "the CI could not be
located in the CMDB", "Please choose a valid Cost Center from the menu".
 Many of us are doing this today as Lisa indicated but we need temp fields
and additional workflow.
