when the "new" casino was built in the 50s, did the towns people care
that it didnt look like the old one? were they pleased with its
grand stature? was it better then the previous one?

Charlie, your mixing way too many issues in that post. Yes the 5th
Ave Pav is significant in its own right. Yes, one can not stay fixed
in a time period or recreate the past (well, you can actually, look
at Colonial Williamsburg for example)

In AP what has happened is that while trying to speed redevelopment
we have lost sight of our own unique identity. They are advertising
us as SoHo meets South Beach, kind of rediculous isn't it?

No one considered that playing on our own identity would bring about
success faster then trying to turn the ship around. Your thoughts
about the Casino (1930 BTW, not 1950) are interesting but misguided.

What we have today are processes and standards by which things are
flagged as worthy of preservation for future generations. The Federal
and State registers for example. Society learned over time that it
was detrimental to constantly eliminate significant parts of culture
in the name of renewal.
