LB also never had the 30 year old reputation of being a place to score drugs,
get
prostitutes and didn't have the crime history that we've had.
Whether we like it or not, "Asbury Park" is considered a dirty word to some
people.
Take my boss for example. He lives in Pt. Pleasant, in a beautiful custom built
home. I
tried to get them to come to AP for a holiday dinner. No way that's going to
happen.
Everytime another murder or well publicized crime happens, he asks me when I'm
going to
move out of Asbury (never). He and his family will never take a chance on
having a good
experience in AP because the possibility for something bad happening is too
great. I think
alot of people think of the city that day. And, let's say you do venture to AP.
You go to our
beachfront area and it still looks like Beirut. You go to our mainstreet and
it's butt ugly. If
you drive around enough, you'll see tons of litter. Or, perhaps some rough
looking kids
will intimidate you, or you'll get to see one of our many lost souls stumbling
around. Come
to visit me, and if I haven't made it outside yet to clean things up you are
likely to find a
discarded 40 oz. beer bottle laying on my lawn. That's the reality of AP for
many people. A
city riddled with social problems that are slow to disappear.
Finally, what about recreation? Sure, we have green spaces, but do we have
parks that are
really being used? Not so much. Playgrounds? Where's the tennis courts, the
community
center? Baseball fields. Baseketball? We don't have any of that. I'd hate to
be a kid growing
up in AP. Sure, we have the boardwalk and beach for 3 months a year, but
there's still not
all that much to do.
