That was an interesting response from Dr. Deka.
I saw the original request. And I understand why no one responded to it. It was actually quite a childish question. But seeing Kamal's answer, I got curious about a few things: 1: >Despite the existence of all possible fault-lines in terms of religion,>ethnicity, linguistic and what have you, running deep into Indian society, she has >remained a single unit.Isn't it extraordinary? *** While I would not question Kamal's conclusion, I wonder if it is an achievement to crow about? Is sticking together in a tenuous relationship the most important goal of Indian nationhood? Or even a significant one? I might go along with Kamal's idea of surviving as a nation inspite of the fractures as an achievement, if it contributed positively towards India's moving forward. My question is, DID it? Does it? What has Kashmir cost India? What has Punjab cost India? What has Nagaland, Mijoram, Assam, Bodoland cost India and continuing to? Another question here: Could India have 'achieved' as much had India found the wisdom and the courage to resolve these conflicts from taking hold to begin with? Had India done the RIGHT things, would India be BETTER off or WORSE off today? > Of couse, there are few "separatist" groups, operating within the >>country--coutsey Muslim barbarians of J&K and Neo-Muslim hoodlums of >Assam, led >by Arif mia and Parveez mia ( formerly Aurobindo Rajkhowa and >Paresh Barua >respectivly). But their numbers are few and far between.I am >sure, they will be >put to sleep in due course of time. *** Am I to read that all is not well in the union? And ALL because of them MUSLIM BARBARIANS at that ? That is indeed an unique conclusion, and certainly explains the response. Also explains why staying together in that tenuous relationship seems to be THE primary goal of Indian nationhood, never mind that many of us lesser people always believed the UNION was ONLY a tool, a means, and NOT the END. Why else would one want to 'put to sleep' all those who do not subscribe to the writer's brand of patriotism, ostensibly born out of an abiding belief in and respect for DEMOCRACY, as could be surmised from "--- India still intact.---unlike Pakistan,---.Why? Because, India is democratic".? > India exports largest number of "human brains", known as "NRI".Here in >US,they >form a critcal mass, constituting the highest income ethnic group >in this >country.Having metastasized to whopping 1.7 million today, they >have galvanized >into a expansionist community, bankrolling US economy by >involving themselves in >tech-savvy industry, hotel chains, restaurant >chains and petty retail stores,>dotting USA. *** Well, this is a deep subject alright. Actually a messy one at that. There something profoundly contradictory to this as India's ACHIEVEMENT. I mean look at the nation's capital--- its human wealth --- they have been fleeing the country by the droves. For decades at that ( spare me the mush aboutthe NEW generationof IT whizzes and all not LEAVING any more) . Why? To prove the union's potential? Or having read the handwriting on the wall, and having realized, Hindu wisdom of millenia to the contrary notwithstanding, that there is only ONE life to live; decided to get the hell out while the going was still good? Including all the scions of the nation's toppmost leaders. Show me a few luminaries at Delhi, whose son/daughter, nephew/niece, in-laws , or siblings are NOT green card holders and citizens, or at least students biding time till the prized visas arrive; in the USA, in Canada, in Britain or some European nation; and I will eat crow. Of course there would always be time to pay flowery tributes to the 'enormous debt to the motherland', just as soon as they get established. What is this ------ ? Who are we kidding? > There are much more to say about India's achievements.I will save them for > next time. *** I think we should have started with that first. cm :-) At 11:03 PM -0500 11/13/02, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: >In a message dated 11/10/02 9:41:15 PM Central Standard Time, >[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > > > > >What is India's main achievement since 1947.
