Dear Netters
*****One suggestion, I would have is for newspapers and other media to
give a monthly list of all these corrupt officials and term them as
DNB has rightly said 'anti national'. The newspapers can make sure
such errant officials are thrown off their jobs and summarily run
of town
Ram has made the above suggestion. It is not a practical one. For quite
some time past the Assamese daily Pratidin used to name leaders as well
members of the public alleged to be involved in corruption and crime. Of late
this type of reporting appears to be absent. The paper has certainly changed for
better or worse.
The law regards a person to be innocent unless found guilty by a proper
court of justice. If allegations are levelled against any member of the
public or even a public servant, he or she will immediately file a defamation
suit. There'll be no end to litigation. The newspapers have a duty to
disseminate information but it must be fair, not partisan.
The law has been described as an ass. Unfortunately we've as yet not been
able to devise a full-proof legal system. Rich and well-to-do peple can
afford brilliant lawyers and they can go free even if guilty. At one time I
wanted to sue the Government for arrear pay. The English Barrister whom I
consulted advised me that although I had a strong case, I should forget
about it as a law suit would cost me more than the total sum of my recoverable
arrear pay.
Common people cannot afford to sue the State as there is no
system of legal aid to the poor in India. The State commands an army of
lawyers and its vast resources to defend itself. In USA and UK, even for a
pennyless person it is possible to sue giants like McDonalds as their cases
are backed by one of the organised campaigners as public causes.
