C-da,
The place where George Washington gathered his army for the first time was in Cambridge, MA , just across the road from where I am right now. Recently, a contingent of US army was theer complete with attack helicopters - to place a wreath where the US Army was established. I had put in a few photos of the monument with its cannons - in my photo album I shared recently.
He was the general and won the war of independence -- which you (US citizens) will all celebrate just 5 days from now on 4th of July (and all well wishers of USA like me.)
But I am given to understand that the declaration of independence and the US constitution were not left to the US army ---but prominent citizens like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were also party to the discussions and signed the declaration. Ben Franklin did not have more than 2 years of formal education - so C-da - seems to have a point there about there being no need for academic credentials -- but he was a self taught man (from books and life) and inventor of variosu scientific devices and given an honorary PhD degree from Oxford - for his scholarship.
I'm sure there are plenty of educated people in Assam (not just degrees - if u please) --who have proved their skills in business, education, development, science or politics or arts or any constructive activity --which should also be party to these talks --just like in case of US Declaration of Independence - though the case here is a bit different. ULFA seems to have excelled in warfare.
Even India and Pakistan - decided to have highly educated people (and skilled in things other than fighting for independence ) to take the helm of their governments.

C-da,I'm glad that you place great value on common sense, but I am surprised that you decided to study at IIT if you believe that academic credentials are meaningless. I could have agreed with Bill Gates if he had said that academic credentials are meaningless. Is IQ alone sufficient for negotiating something equivalent to development issues? In that sense Hitler was also very intelligent .Umesh
Chan Mahanta <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:Your contention was that since the ULFA (to you obviously) 'seems' to be made up of high-school dropouts , they could not possibly have any skills either to have a political platform or plan or the intelligence to negotiate with GoI.My point is that anyone making such observation is:A: Not a very bright person, never mind what degrees or educational credentials he might have to flaunt. It is a quintessentially desi trait as most of us here would know. And the results in desi-govt. is all the proof one needs. B: Only the poorly educated or one without common sense would equate academic credentials with intelligence. Because even a completely unschooled person could be far more skilled in political or social issues or warfare or business or leadership etc. etc. than say an IIT degree flaunter or an MIT PhD holder. I cannot tell you what 'professional' skills ULFA leaders or cadres have. I don't know any of them. But I can tell you this from observation, they are far more intelligent, skilled and courageous than people making these half-assed comments. Also, as Dilip explained, it is quite possible; in fact it is quite well known in Assam; that some of Assam's best advise ULFA on a variety of issues. And I can tell you that these are no less than any North or South or Central Indian, either in intelligence or in professional skills and far more enlightened than any two bit General of the Indian armed forces that Delhi sends out to rule the NE. Even Ram could imagine that, in spite of the smoke and mirrors that disorient him so often.Hope that helps. At 11:46 PM +0100 6/29/05, umesh sharma wrote:C-da,Instead of answering my question with another question ,why don't you attamept to highlight the professional skills of ULFA . You seem to have lots of faith in their ability .Umesh

In what language does the following

mean that? I am still wondering about the quality of education that
could generate such questions and such explanations.

Same comment again, Dilip's observations not withstanding, which
incidentally could be deep dark mysteries only to the woefully
clueless.
