Scott,

Besides security, you need to consider liability and wiring tapping laws.

In the area of liability, you need to be careful, especially if any personal or private information is recorded. Especially if a credit card is uttered during the call, then you need to make sure your in compliance with the merchant data security requirements. Which means if you do record an utterance of credit card information, you need to have a documented security process, which documents storage, access and data protection including encryption of the audio.

Under wiring tapping, you need to be aware of the location of each party on the call. Ontario has a one party requirement ( so if one person is aware that the call is being recorded ) your ok in Ontario, but if the other person on the call is not in Ontario then you need to be aware. Say the other person was in Maryland, well they have a totally inclusive two party law ( everyone on call needs to be aware in the case of a conference call ). So if you don't make the person in Maryland aware, then your breaking Maryland State law, even if your initiating the call from Ontario.

Just want to make you aware, since ignorance is not a defense. Especially in the US, you don't want to be traveling and get grabbed like the guy from BetOnSports.

Actually publishing the files doesn't need to be that hard, the only part that I would say needs to be considered carefully is security. Ignoring security and going for simplicity, you just need to specify a location and name for the file using asterisk variables that will uniquely identify it (timestamp, channel, etc), and then make the location where you stored it available to the user, whether via FTP, HTTP or some more secure method. Yes, for the purpose this Asterisk box serves it would be greatly
beneficial if the users could have an easy way to access these
recording almost immediately after a call. I’m concerned emailing
may be a problem since the ISP this box is on is Rogers and I
think they block the SMTP port. I suppose I can change the port
however, I’m fairly new to Linux and want to avoid it.. unless
    it’s extremely easy.

This is my first asterisk box… it’s so amazing what can be done. I spent a lot of money on a Nortel BCM for the last company I
worked for. It’s funny how after a few hours of tinkering I have
a box with far more functionality… I remember for my BCM I had to
purchase a third party application (Telrex) for recording that
cost close to $500 USD/seat. I can’t believe the kind of features
    that are native to Asterisk.

These postings have been an incredible help and the O’Reilly book
    never leaves my lap.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

    Cheers,

    Scott

    Get a bigger hard drive!

OK seriously, in order to advise you on what to do with them we
need to understand what they are being used for. If it's just for
archive purposes I would say store them for a month (or whatever
your storage will allow) and then FTP them off the system to an
    archive somewhere.

If you need them right after the call then email may be a better
option, although again you may want to store them still and have
the user grab them using FTP or whatever.

There are a million cool ways to do this.

Of course… silly me. Thanks for the hand Philip.
Looks like recording is the easy part. Now that I’ve got it
working nicely, I want to do something with them. Either
email them or post them to a webpage or anything else that
        makes sense.

        Anyone have any suggestions?

If your doing a low amount of simultaneous calls you can use
        asterisks native recording feature..

You can find an example and more information here >

Hi All, I’m looking to have my asterisk box record phone
conversations, either 100% of the time or user invoked, and
then email them as an attachment upon completion of call. Does anyone have experience with this? Perhaps you can point
        me in the right direction.

        Thanks in advance!!
