The nerd vittles build did not seem to help.  I believe this is
related to timing issues with vmware and clock virtualization.

I'm going to try a couple of things:

- changing clock settings in the kernel
- disabling SMP
- Other things as listed in the VMWare Timekeeping whitepaper
