I made the following changes:
1) Went from 2 virtual CPUs down to one, and booted the non smp kernel
2) Added the following to my kernel boot parameters:
noapic clock=pit nolapic nosmp
I had already set the guest to synchronize with the hosts time using
vmware tools.
Things are now much improved with only the occasional static...

I'm going to try a couple of things:
- changing clock settings in the kernel
- disabling SMP
- Other things as listed in the VMWare Timekeeping whitepaper
