It really does seem to depend on the age of the board. As far as I can tell it's Southbridge related. Some, like yourself have never had a problem, sadly the majority have.
The one quote the seems to stand out is 'never EVER use VIA with Linux'. For me, I've tried numerous combos, like ASUS, Shuttle etc, the common theme is the Via Chipset.
