You are talking about VIA chipset, right? I've got numerous projects running
Linux and Asterisk on top with VIA based motherboards. The CPU is usually
Celeron/P3 600-1000. Before installing them we run burn test for 10 days
(100 simultaneous tar instances creating an archive with compression to
/dev/null) with running Asterisk. Never had a single problem with them.

It is kinda hard to believe in your story taking into consideration the fact
that a lot of embedded professional single board computers (5.25, 3.5 and
some ITX, see, for example
http://www.icpamerica.com/products/single_board_computers/5_25_NOVA/default.
html ) use VIA chipsets and officially support Linux.

It really does seem to depend on the age of the board.

As far as I can tell it's Southbridge related. Some, like yourself have
never had a problem, sadly the majority have.

The one quote the seems to stand out is 'never EVER use VIA with Linux'. For
me, I've tried numerous combos, like ASUS, Shuttle etc, the common theme is
the Via Chipset.

Your mileage may vary of course

I have a VIA EPIA and it has never stopped. I think it is the MII but can't
remember now. It came with an onboard CF reader/ Cardbus slot. I removed it
as it was socketed and turned off all unused ports in the bios. I then use
an IDE to CF adaptor for booting it. Works a treat.
