[Apologies if this is a duplicate, the original seems to have got lost]

Thanks for all your responses (wow!) and before I address individual
points let me apologise if I appeared too negative, and make it clear that
I'm very enthusiastic about astlinux in general, and have already donated
(and purchased a net4801 etc) and corresponded with Kristian offering
help.

Since the original post I've noticed that m0n0wall seems to be configured
in exactly the way I suggested - with a default IP of 192.168.1.1 - why is
this not a good idea?

Only Astlinux in this instance. :-)

Fair comment.

True, but I don't.

I don't understand this bit, which maybe answers the question. I guess
it's true that on large networks there's generally an established way to
monitor things, and on a small homeoffice one the number of possibilities
is low, so trial and error doesn't take long.

Understood, but let's not make it harder than it needs to be.

> You may have purchased the Soekris but the Soekris is headless...

I know, I know, I'm just trying to improve things - and get my box
working! I've already hit delays waiting for a UK power lead, a CF writer,
a null modem cable, searching for documentation etc., and I'm running out
of time.

I'm volunteering...setting up a BB is trivial (although keeping spam out
can be a pain), would people here actually use it? I've set one up in the
past and found the RSS feed from it very useful.

> ...Average user? This is network and telephony administrator work...

Yes, but the whole point is that it's orders of magnitude cheaper than
your average PBX and hence a different market. I'm trying to set it up in
a "home office" situation. I do actually have lots of experience in
programming and communications (but not PBX administration or Linux as it
happens) so should be a fairly good target user, I would have thought.

> Have you asked for a refund?

No, I'd rather fix the problems thanks. :-)

> How about offering Kristian a bit of help instead of complaining?...

Have done (private e-mail). I'll be fixing some of the broken links when
he gives me privs.

> ... write a howto...

More than happy to, but I'm struggling to find what's already there and
understand it myself first. (If anyone wants to know about ISDN by the
way, there's a tutorial linked from my web page, see sig below.)

> ...help people on mailing lists...

That's why I'm here...

> ...click the PayPal links...

Have done, and will do so again if I ever get it all working!
