Thanks for this comprehensive overview Paul.

I can confirm that the fr.po is very lagging behind. I've had a look at it today to get an overview of the work needed and, at the top of the ~600 untranslated strings, there is also ~600 fuzzy strings (which need to be looked at also). More over, I've spotted a few inconsistencies/errors. Not a lot, just a few. And the PO file
needs to be updated from the current POT file (see below).

My decision is to take on a complete revision of the fr.po .
I've started today and reviewed the ~1000 first lines. I've made a PR on github with it that you can find here : https://github.com/audacity/audacity/pull/217
You can merge it whenever you want :
1) If you merge it right now, I'll make another PR for the next batch of strings translation 2) If you don't merge it right now, I'll add another commit to this PR for the next batch of strings translation Once again here, feel free to merge it whenever you want (preferably before the 2.2.1 release !).

I understand and acknowledge that I'm working with a PO file made from a POT file dated 2017-07-22 which isn't the current one (being 2017-11-06). The reason is that I don't know yet what is the Audacity process to update an already existing .po file from a new POT and I don't want to mess up with that while there are already a lot of strings which can be update or translated, most of those likely still being within the
new POT file.

If someone here could share with me the magics to tell :
"hey audacity translation machinery, can you update the fr.po file from the pot file please"
be sure it will be greatly appreciated.

I'll have some time tomorrow to work on it, pretty much no time on Sunday, and certainly a bunch of time on Monday and Tuesday. That means that, despite I can't promise to have the translation 100% finished by the 29, still it should be a lot improved and the 100% translated could be in the radar for the next version
after 2.2.1.

BTW, Christian Brochec uses to be the French translator IIRC.
Is he still active or not at all ?

Regards,
Olivier

Expect Release Candidate 1 for 2.2.1 very soon, and you are too late
for that.

The hope is to put the Release out on 1 Dec, having found no urgent
bugs, and making it identical to this RC1 build, at least for the C++
source code.

However, we are so much in need of an update of this important
langauge file, which is so very out of date now, that I may make an
exception for inclusion of fr.po.

I count 533 unstranslated strings:

msgcmp fr.po audacity.pot  2>&1 | grep untranslated  | wc

That's a lot of work!

Let's say, get me as much update as you can finish, by Wednesday 29
Nov. Even partial resuls will be helpful.

Hi Paul and all,

I'm wondering if there is a deadline already defined for the GUI
translation
to be included in the next version ?

Happy to hear from you too. This means that my subscription has

Re: the desktop file 2 strings, yes they're still good and relevant.
(I'm the one who submitted those, see
https://github.com/audacity/audacity/pull/129 [1] )

Looking forward to push the French translation of the GUI up to
100%.

Cheers,
Olivier

Pleased to hear from you.

As you may see from recent mails here, we are also trying to
translate
the two strings in src/audacity.desktop.in [2] [2]. But we already
have
French for those. Tell me if these still sound good. If not, just
mail me other strings to copy and paste:

GenericName=Sound Editor
GenericName[fr]=Éditeur audio

Comment=Record and edit audio files

Comment[fr]=Enregistrer et éditer des fichiers audio

Hi,

This email to say hello to everybody here and to check if I'm
correctly subscribed to the mailing list.

I'm intending to push the French GUI translation to 100% in the
coming days.
