Racing Game turning system

Hi all,
I am re coding S Quad Racing in Python. I know this has been tried before, but I was wondering if I should include the 360 degree, fps like car turning system. Isn't this what is in mainstream games?
  The way I would do that, was to make the track like an open world, instead of the top speed approach, which I'd in fact taken, where the track was a straight forward shot, and turning moved you left or right on the x axis. In the fps like turning system, though, you would have the ability to spin the car around at all times, to make it go any direction, kind of like the movement in swamp, but in a car.
  The reason I haven't done this is because I heard it failed hard core in the last audio racing game that attempted it.
  Alternatively, I was thinking that perhaps a tap of the left or right arrows would turn the car 90 degrees, so that there would still be the open world feel, but it wouldn't be so hard to insure your c ar was going straight and not slightly drifting.
  Would any of these ideas be good? Or do you guys have improvements/suggestions, Etc.
