Holden, the system that seems to cause the least problems is Transgaming's Cider, which was used for the mac port of GTA San Andreas which you can buy in the app store. That seems to not have different problems with different machines, because it's a more solid implementation. Problem is, their market is geared toward developers, and it doesn't look like it's free.
