Navigation in large mud areas

I usually don't have a problem with navigation or mental spacial mapping. However, I've just started to play a game called batmud and what I noticed immediately was areas being very large with large parts of it being identical room descriptions with identical room names. E.g you can have empty streets consisting of 20 empty mostly identical rooms in a row with many possible exits. Maybe its just me, but I find it pretty hard to build a mental picture of my surroundings in such places.

If anyone has played muds with such large areas before with little distinguishing landmarks, navigation/orientation tips would be much appreciated.
