I would try to clean that material on the headphones because I'd imagine that builds up a healthy colony of bacteria after a while. You could try a bit of hydrogen peroxide in the ear, lay on your side with the affected ear up and wait maybe 3-5 minutes then do the other one. You want a little bit, maybe a drop if you can manage. You want room for it to bubble and it won't if your ear canal is flooded with the stuff. If I do that, I always rinse out with water afterward.
I do think that if this persists, it's worthy of getting it checked out. Hearing problems can turn bad in a heartbeat, and you can end up with a permanent hearing loss that could have been prevented.
