Why do you say that XML is a bad idea? I actually quite like the idea of:

In addition to what the  others have said, I suspect they walled up certain parts of the zones, then moved you to another zone to get into a house for example. Either that, or they did some clever stuff to silence everything outside.

Personally, in Earwax, I'd like to have it so you could specify a filter frequency for sounds outside of a specified box. That way you could still hear stuff that was going on outside the place you were hiding, so you could wait for soldiers, zombies, or the passing killer hen party. Of course that would depend on whether or not Camlorn puts filters into Synthizer.
