Another layman-type question here.
So when you play something like Manamon, environments are their own little pocket universes. Even if there's an NPC right inside the door of a hotel, you don't hear them till you step in.
Something like AHC, for instance, will let you hear through fences and hedges and thickets, but not through walls.
If my own RPG ever works out, I'd love for there to be differences. For instance, if you go to someone's house and they're very near the market, and the market is busy and boisterous by day, it would be cool if you could hear that ambiance, though muted, while in their home. By contrast, it would be neat if, in a stone tower with thick walls, outside sound just didn't come in at all. I don't know how fiddly that is, or if I'm hoping for too much for an audio RPG there. These details are meant more for immersion than for any functional benefit, for the most part. I think it's AHC that has me curious here, because that game's overall soundscaping is beautiful.
