Chrono Trigger used the active turn system to introduce double and tripple techs, powerful attacks performed by two or three party members at the same time. I think it was a very good mechanic. It encouraged you to wait until your second characters turn was up, instead of acting as soon as you can.
Also, another implementation of active battles is when certain enemies are more vulnerable if you attack at a certain point in their turn, or they could retaliate if you attack at the wrong time. Just like the Scorpion sentinel boss in FF VII.
