Discourse isn't niche at all. Its used by a ton of projects, and people really need to get off the PunBB bandwagon anyway. If you want modern functionality, you have to go with modern tools. You don't like the topic list layout? I'm strongly encouraged to say 'too bad, get over it'. But there's themes and skins too.
Backing up the database is not exactly possible. Unless, of course, someone is willing to go through each and every single entry and rebuild it by hand.
As for cost? Not a problem. Its system requirements are cheap. I agree with Camlorn though.
