We're looking into this. Although it's not immediately obvious to me why the behavior would differ from one unit to the next, I'm much more inclined to suspect an error in the commands being sent to the s/pdif receiver, as opposed to a hardware issue.
One thing to check is to make sure that both the word clock input and output settings are disabled.
