I agree that very good A/D converters cost a lot of money. But we're
talking about vinyl here, which is not really much of a challenge. I'd
suggest that a Lucid AD9624, which can be had for under a grand, is
easily good enough to transparently cope with anything that comes off a
turntable. Probably even an old M-Audio Flying Calf would do fine. (And
I say this as a user of a Linn LP12/Lingo/Ittok/Karma - it's not as if
I don't appreciate decent vinyl replay).

Contrast this to the price of the ATC SCA2 preamp, which costs about
£4,000.

I don't really have an "obsession" about eliminating the preamp. I just
happen to think that it's worth doing if you can't afford the mega-price
of a genuinely transparent preamp. I ditched a £2,500 preamp once I
heard the improvement gained by removing it from the system.
