FLAC vs WAV ----------- There is no difference in the information stored within the formats themselves. Is there a theoretical chance of them sounding different?
If you have FLAC on your computer there is the choice of: A. Streaming raw FLAC to the Squeezebox (the FLAC is decoded within the Squeezebox player). B. Decoding the FLAC to WAV at the server and streaming WAV to the Squeezebox player (WAV requires much less processing on the player). With A. more data is transferred across the network (bad) and less processing is done within the Squeezebox player (good). Whether this leads to a different sound, and if so whether it is a better sound, is another argument. And you could have separate arguments over analog out and digital. Personally, I have never detected a difference. I would be interested to hear if anyone could tell in a blind test - I have not heard of such. Power Supplies -------------- I use a linear regulated power supply. I do so because *I believe* it produces lower noise levels than the switching unit. I haven't tested the end sound blind...but I feel that lower noise (my assumption) can't make my system sound any worse - and the cost of the power supply wasn't massive :-) Sean Adams has posted some data indicating that the stock switching supply produces similar noise to a linear regulated supply. Either way, once again I know of no blind test which demonstrates a difference between power supplies. For me a linear regulated supply is simply a comfort factor with a very low cost.
