I would also add that the Stereophile ratings are not a reliable index
of how good any piece of gear will sound in your system with your other
gear and, most importantly, YOUR ears and music preferences. Don't ever
base a decision on whether Stereophile rated something A or A+ or B or
whatever. As time goes on, Stereophile's reviewers have changed,
preferences have changed, ratings have tended to inflate, certain types
of gear are more popular than others, and a host of other factors
unconnected to how "good" any given piece will actually sound to you
and in comparison to some other piece you are considering. From all
I've read, if you are not going to use the Transporter's DAC, just buy
the SB3 or Duet. The Transporter's DAC is very good and many have found
it of comparable or better quality than the DAC they were using with
some other transport. The only way you are going to answer this
question is to buy a Transporter (hopefully a used one so you can save
some $$) and try it for yourself, A/B'ing with all your other gear. If
you don't think it superior, you will certainly be able to resell it
(eg on Audiogon) for what you paid. They are always snapped up when
they come up used on Audigon, usually for around $1600.
