I've heard the B&W CM9 now. What are my impressions?

I am still a fan of actives, and this is a passive speaker. However,
they sound very good. Although I would say they are more laid-back than
is strictly neutral the actual balance through the frequencies seems
quite smooth and without offensive local colourations. The only
exception was the bass, which I found a bit full at certain
frequencies. However, my friend is going to use a sub and stop up the
reflex port. This should give a more rolled off, leaner bass and then I
will have a listen again and see what I think. He has different tastes
to me in that department, anyway.

There is good detail and information on offer but it isn't immediately
thrown in your face because of the laid-back balance. But it's there.
Also, I had the impression of a big sound stage extending sideways and
backwards.

It was a Yamaha 7.1 amp used with two channels bridged for each
speaker. This speaker probably needs a bit of juice to work well. B&W
make good speakers IME. I don't know of any (apart from the Nautilus)
that are fully active though.

It's a personal thing though, choosing speakers. Listen well first.
