Yeah - I was exaggerating for effect! - but I'd still need 4 transports
and DAC's just for stereo (3 without the Sub...)

Sure you can do the x-over work server side - by running three
instances of Inguz to 3 synced players. You'd need something like the
full version of Audiolense XO to create the 3 filters - but it CAN be
done, albeit at a cost! :-)
