I'm no expert on classical music but I do have Beethoven 9 (and Mahler
4 but not 2) - I will investigate.
I have the von karajan Beethoven box...

20dB is a LARGE swing in level. If most of an album was at -20dB and
then a sudden peak hit 0dB it would be quite a shock to the system!
