right, my last modification post, I have found the solution, for me at least.
It is SBT out of the box settings with buffer at default of 20000 ie tt -b 20000, now everything sounds correct. of course, this is how it was designed to be used. so with TT3.0 the sound is cleaned up and we have the original balance, rhythm and timing. previously i had been using buffer of 3200, but this threw it out of balance. so, I have beeen chasing my tail round in circles, but there you go. can SBT be changed to sound better by changing priorities ? i am not sure because something always suffers, as one thing is tweaked something else goes out of balance.
